Thanks to the newest issue (March/April 2012) of Makeup Artist Magazine I’ve been introduced to a new iPad application designed specifically for the working makeup artist called Face ChartPro. It was created by YouTube famous Koren Zander (aka. EnKore Makeup) to assist us with the project of face chart making.

The second I started reading the article I downloaded the application so I could play and learn at the same time. My first thoughts of the application were great, especially when I considered it’s convenience. No longer will I have to make a mess with pencil crayons and pastels on paper (and feel like second grader). No longer will I need to carry a manila folder full of paper, afraid of bending or creasing anything or smudging any of the work.No longer will I need to keep track of this loose paper all over the place. They’re save-able and go straight into your photo folder where you can easily find them for future reference.

They stay clean and in one place to so you can easily show clients. What if the client doesn’t like 100% what they see? It’s easy to edit, erase or add to the face chart right then and there. You could even pass it on to the client – maybe they can draw out what they’re visualizing.

There are a couple different options of face charts that are available. There is a blank page, a full face with eyes open or closed or just a single eye also with the choice of opened or closed. There are 9 different brush types to choose from, including an airbrush feature, there is also an animal print and glitter add on and an eraser tool. The eraser tool so far has been most challenging – its size is adjustable but I still find it too large, it erases what you want but fades everything around it too. Sometimes this does come in handy though, especially when you find that you’re a bit heavy handed in the application of colour.

The colour choices are great. You are offered basic shades for each part of the face (eyes, skin tone and lips) but they’re all adjustable width the gradient tool – you can pick your own mix.

My two favourite features of Face Chart Pro are the eyelash drawer (as Koren calls it) and the mirror tool. These two things I find the most challenging on 2D paper – drawing eyelashes and making the left side a seven and clean as the right.

The Eyelash drawer lets you choose from several different options – top lashes,bottom lashes, even specific ones for the single closed eye. To adjust their sizing, simply use the eraser tool.

The mirror tool is exactly what it sounds like – whatever you’re doing on the right eye, it will mimic exactly on the left. It’s a time and patience saver! I do find that some adjustments are needed after to slightly even things out, but no big deal.

The one downfall to the app (which I haven’t experienced often, but others do) is it crashing in the middle of a chart and not saving.Koren advises to close all background apps that you may not be using – I find this works, and always remember to save after you’ve completed a step.

I no longer dread the hassle of drawing up face charts. Now I just make them while conveniently lying on my couch instead of sitting in an uncomfortable chair while hunched over my drafting table.

I’ve attached one of my first tries here so you all can see what they look like. If you don’t have an iPad, Koren says you can use this app on the iPhone, though it does drain memory and you can only access the blank canvas and single eye chart options –but its still worth the try I think!
